Sept. '62 - TV comedy series 'The Beverly Hillbillies' premiers on CBS.

Oct. '62 - LA Dodgers shortstop, Maury Wills sets a new record for stolen bases - 104, breaking Ty Cobb's old record of 96.  

Dodgers finish regular season in a tie.  In a special, 'best 2 out of 3' penant championship series, Giants beat Dodgers, then lose to the Yankees in the '62 World Series.

Oct. '62 - Cuban Missile Crisis: Pres. Kennedy orders naval blockade of Cuba, demanding that the USSR remove nuclear missiles from Cuba. Soviets agree to remove missiles, ending the most dangerous US- Russian confrontation of the Cold War.

Nov. '62 - Gov. Pat Brown beats former V.P. Richard Nixon to be re-elected as Gov. of California. Bernie Haraldson wins $1 bet with Dave Piirto over who would win.

Dec. '62 - 'Lawrence of Arabia' premiers in Hollywood.

Jan. '63 - The cost of a 1st class stamp rises to 5 cents from 4.

Feb. '63 - the Boeing 727 makes its first commercial flight.

Mar. '63 - L.A. ends 90 years of street car service.

April '63 - USS. Thresher, a nuclear powered submarine 220 miles off the Atlantic coast with the loss of all 129 crew members.

May '63 - Telstar satellite launched, allowing live, transatlantic telecasts.

June '63 - U.S. Supreme Court outlaws Bible reading and prayer in public schools.

Pres. Kennedy calls segregation 'morally wrong' stating, 'it is time to act.'
